Olympic gymnastic results 2016: Aliya Mustafina wins gold medal in women's uneven bars

Mustafina took gold, Kocian of the U.S. took silver and Scheder earned bronze for Germany.

Aliya Mustafina took the gold medal in the women's uneven bars event at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Sunday. Madison Kocian of the United States came up just behind her and took silver, while Sophie Scheder of Germany took bronze.

When Gabby Douglas went up she was in second place with a score of 15.066, finishing behind Jessica Brizeida Lopez Arocha of Venezuela, who put up a 15.333 in first. Mustafina quickly upped the stakes with a huge score of 15.900. Kocian went up next, and she took second place with a score of 15.833.

Kocian tied with Russia's Daria Spiridonova and two other gymnasts for the top spot in the uneven bars at the last world championships. Kocian and Spiridonova were both competing in the event on Sunday as well. One tenth of a point behind those four at the world championships was Douglas, the 2012 Olympics all-around champion.

Unfortunately for Spiridonova, she went off the bar early in her routine and did not stand a chance of earning a medal.

The Olympics have been rough for Douglas, who has performed exceedingly well and earned a gold medal in team competition, but did not get to compete in all-around competition. The rules in the Olympics only allow two people from each nation to advance to the individual all-around competition, and Douglas finished third for the U.S., despite being better than every other person on every other team.

Mustafina was the defending champion in the event.

Neither Douglas nor Kocian will compete in other individual events. Simone Biles participated in the vault competition earlier on Sunday, while Aly Raisman and Laurie Hernandez will also compete in events on later days in the competition.
