The moral of the story: Don't offer a discount based on Michigan's score right before a game against Rutgers.
Michigan gave Rutgers the blowout of the millennium on Saturday night. The final score was 78-0, the biggest margin of victory in a game between two top-division teams since the turn of the century.
If you live in Ann Arbor and like steak, this is terrific timing. The Ruth's Chris Steak House in UM's city announced a promotion on Friday under which it takes Michigan's margin of victory and lowers patrons' bills by the corresponding percentage. As the restaurant puts it, a 20-point Wolverines win means 20 percent off. Sounds lovely.
This is fine. But Ruth's Chris was probably not banking on Michigan waltzing into Piscataway and winning by 78 points, which, in theory, now means the restaurant is going to be giving up 78 percent's worth of free meat this week.
Some internet sleuths have said that Ruth's Chris will cap the price deduction at 50 percent, which would make Saturday's carnage more financially manageable for ownership. SB Nation called Ruth's Chris in Ann Arbor early Sunday morning seeking comment, but our call wasn't answered or immediately returned – likely because the restaurant was closed. We'll update this post as more information becomes available.
