Olympic volleyball results 2016: USA men beat France on Saturday

The USA beat France in volleyball action on Saturday.

The United States was pushed to four sets, but they managed to take down the French team in men's volleyball on Saturday. The US took the first two sets, dropped the third and then won the fourth to get the victory, 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-22.

The match was close throughout, with France generally serving well and keeping the United States honest, but ultimately they were not enough. The US men took the first set by a score of 25-22, winning it in 25 minutes before the second set went in much the same fashion.

It was a matter of playing extremely well at the net for the US. They had several blocks in the opening set, denying the French before they could ever get the ball over the net. But France did manage to put things together in the third set, dominating the United States to force a fourth set, 25-14. The fourth set was once again closely contested, but the US won, 25-22.

They will now wait for the results of Canada's match against Mexico. They're fighting for a quarterfinal spot but they went into Saturday tied with Canada.

In other action, Iran continued to impress by taking down Egypt in straight sets. While they were swept by Argentina on Day 1 and they narrowly fell to the No. 2-ranked Poland, the debuting Iranian volleyball team bested Egypt, 28-26, 25-22, 25-16. Egypt will not advance to the quarterfinals, with only three points in four matches played. Iran has earned a spot in the quarterfinals.

Also earlier in the day, Argentina took down Cuba in straight sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-16. It was a dominant performance from Argentina, who had Cuba on the ropes for the entire match. Argentina has nine points and is in a battle with Poland for the top seed in Pool B after their match on Saturday. Cuba is now eliminated from quarterfinals eligibility, having won only one set in Rio.
