Olympic volleyball results 2016: United States women earn top seed while Netherlands surprise

The Netherlands hasn't competed in Olympics women's volleyball since 1996, but they earned the top seed in their pool. Meanwhile, the U.S. hasn't lost a game.

The United States women's volleyball team lost its first match against China, in part thanks to a slow start with six service errors, but proceeded to win the next three to advance to the top of Pool B in the preliminary rounds.

The U.S. team earned the top seed after beating all five teams they faced in pool play, including 2-2 China on Sunday. After facing China nine times before throughout their Olympics tournament, the game was more for bragging rights than anything else -- China couldn't have taken the top seed from the United States no matter what happened.

The United States will take on fourth-seeded Japan on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2 spot in Pool B went to underdog Netherlands, playing their first Olympics in volleyball since 1996. They went 4-1 in the preliminary rounds, giving them 11 points needed to fall one behind the United States. In third place in Pool B is Serbia.

In Pool A, Brazil earned the top seed while Korea took the No. 2 seed. Here are the games that will be played on Tuesday.

All games on Tuesday in Eastern Time

Korea vs. Netherlands, 8 a.m.

Japan vs. United States, 12 p.m.

Russia vs. Serbia, 4 p.m.

Brazil vs. China, 8:15 p.m.
