Former Capital Eric Fehr haunts his old team as Penguins win Game 2

Eric Fehr scored the game-winner in a feisty third game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins survived another low-scoring, hard-checking affair with the Washington Capitals to pull out a 2-1 win in Game 2.

The series heads back to Pittsburgh on Monday tied at 1-1.

Both goalies were generally excellent on Saturday night. Washington goalie Braden Holtby stopped 33 shots, while Penguins rookie goalie Matt Murray allowed one goal on 24 shots against. Former Capital winger Eric Fehr had the game-winning goal for the Penguins.

Game 2 got off to an ugly start. Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta was injured early in the first period when he was hit late and high by Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik. Maatta never returned to the game. Orpik was not ejected, and then factored in both goals the Capitals gave up. Playoff narratives!

The first half of the game was completely dominated by the Penguins, who held a 28-10 shot advantage by the end of the second period. The Capitals had barely tested Penguins goalie Matt Murray midway through the second period.

The Penguins finally broke through Holtby at 7:08 in the second period. Nick Bonino found Carl Hagelin with a pass all alone in the slot to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Washington appeared to tie the game late in the frame, but it was waved off because a Capitals player had fallen on top of the Penguins' goalie before the shot. The Penguins led 1-0 heading into the third period.

Pittsburgh was 42-0-0 this season (including the playoffs) when leading after two periods.

Washington upped the ante in the third and it paid off. With Penguins defenseman Kris Letang in the penalty box for tripping, the best power play in the playoffs capitalized. Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson assisted on a goal by Marcus Johansson, tying the game at 1-1 just four minutes into the third period.

Capitals center Mike Richards missed a wide open net, and his team immediately paid for it. Minutes later, the Penguins took a 2-1 lead when Fehr redirected a shot past Holtby for the game-winner.
