As NFL teams clarify their roster needs and cap situations for the coming season, veteran players are often casualties. Keep up with all the latest cuts here.
As the start of the new league year approaches and coaching staffs and front offices assess their needs and cap situations for the 2016 NFL season, teams invariably begin to part ways with veteran players. Once the new league year begins on March 9 and salary implications change, this list will expand more quickly.
Perhaps the player has lost a step due to age, or his cap hit exceeds his usefulness. Perhaps he's still got plenty of gas left in the tank, but he just no longer fits the team's needs on the field. There are any number of reasons for a team to move on from a veteran player, and the end result is that plenty of players with valuable NFL experience will be available and looking for a place to land.
The cuts commenced the day after the Super Bowl when the Philadelphia Eagles released Riley Cooper. The wide receiver is coming off of an unproductive season, and the team saves $2.9 million in cap space with the move. The Atlanta Falcons also parted ways with veteran strong safety William Moore and linebacker Justin Durant. Moore has been solid for the Falcons when healthy, but he was sidelined for nine games in 2014 and five games in 2015.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is expected to be released, but due to salary cap reasons, that reportedly won't happen until the new league year starts.
We'll keep track of all of the veteran cuts as they're announced in days to come. Be sure to check back often for the latest updates.
